Salary / FLSA / Non-exempt

Teacher Assistant / Grade 59 ($16.48 - $22.23 per hour); plus local supplement, if applicable

 

The salary for this position is based upon the successful applicant’s years of service in the NC State Retirement System in the same or similar position. Experience outside of this system is not recognized for pay purposes. For current Lincoln County School employees, this position will be paid according to the current Lincoln County Schools’ pay scale.

 

The Teacher Assistant/Behavior Support provides individualized behavioral

support while utilizing positive research-based interventions to teach students how to appropriately manage their own behavior.  In addition, the BSA models the interventions with teachers and assists the teachers in gaining knowledge on how to work with the identified students. When necessary, the BSA works with staff and students to de escalate crisis situations that may arise from inappropriate behavior.  The goal is to move the BSA away from the student as the student gains more independent skills.  The BSA may be working with more than one student at different school sites.

 

  • The Behavior Support Assistant’s (BSA) work day is 7.50 hours, from 7:45 until 3:15 with a 30-minute lunch unless changed for coverage needs for assigned student.
  • Maintain and follow a schedule of service for assigned students.  Changes may only occur based on the agreement of the principal/assistant principal.
  • Ability to solve independently most minor problems
  • Ability to follow minimally detailed written and oral instructions without constant supervision
  • Ability to record and store data accurately
  • Ability to maintain confidentiality of student information
  • Ability to establish and maintain working relationships with parents, students, teachers, staff, and administrators
  • The employee provides support to the teacher in the management of student misbehavior
  • Responsibilities: A wide variety of tasks are performed to support the teacher in the management of student behavior
  • The work is directed by specific instructions, precedents and established policy
  • Problems are solved through the exercise of judgment in selecting the best course of action to be taken
  • The work is performed under the limited supervision of the teacher and/or principal
  • Provides individualized redirection of student misbehavior
  • Demonstrates and models appropriate behavior for students
  • Monitors and redirects student tasks as assigned by teacher
  • Keeps students on task
  • Praises and reinforces the behavior of students
  • Reports student progress to teacher
  • Instructional preparation/support
  • Arranges classroom furnishings and equipment
  • Prepares visual aids
  • Duplicates materials
  • Reorganizes materials at the end of day
  • Serves as proctor during testing
  • Records student behavior
  • Files data according to regulatory requirements
  • Monitors student behavior
  • Supervises students in the classroom and other locations
  • Creates and distributes awards for positive behavior
  • Promotes student self esteem
  • Teaches citizenship, social skills and respect for others
  • Reconciles minor student conflicts
  • Participates in development of discipline policy
  • Disciplines misbehavior through approved methods
  • Reports discipline problems to teacher or principal
  • Reports to supervisor significant change or lack of change in student behavior
  • Other duties as assigned
